A new study concludes that antacids can cause bone fractures.
Nearly 100 million Americans estimated to be taking prescription and over-the-counter antacid and heartburn medications may be at an increased risk of bone fractures. These medications, called “proton pump inhibitors” reduce the production of stomach acid in the process of trying to prevent heart burn and/or ulcers.
The connection between these medications and bone fractures is not new, in fact the Food and Drug Administration required a warning label to be placed on all product packaging in 2010. However, the new report published in the March issue of the medical research journal PLOS Genetics (read article ), explains the reasoning and mechanism behind this issue.
Stomach acid in the gastrointestinal tract is not only a vital aid in digestion but also plays an important role in helping the intestines absorb and transfer calcium to the skeletal system. A reduction in stomach acid production can therefore be considerably detrimental especially in the case of bone nutrition.
